Welcome to Connect

Welcome to the first Connect Blog post! We are excited to announce our new site, which includes enhanced features for... what else.... CONNECTING! The new site features this blog, where you can post comments, a completely interactive forum, as well as on demand videos. Check back often as we will be updating all the time with new, local, Southwest Florida content.

What is Connect? Connect is an exciting multimedia initiative designed to give Southwest Floridians a dynamic place to explore ways to connect within the region’s diverse and ever-evolving communities. Through Connect!, the outdated concept of a passive audience will be transformed into an interactive, two-way street, where WGCU invites your participation. The project will spotlight the following ways to connect:

  • through the cultural arts
  • by volunteering
  • by living green
  • through wellness
  • by exploring our region
  • by starting a small business
  • through political action
  • through continual learning

At its core Connect is a multimedia project designed to motivate new and longtime Southwest Floridians to become engaged in community activities, to improve the quality of life for themselves and others, and to strengthen the social, democratic, and cultural health of our region.

Can't wait to get involved!

Friday night's Connect! segment was truly a heart-grabber.  From the "Cuddler" program for preemies to the difficult, but rewarding Avow Hospice volunteers, we got a real sense of how generous and caring the volunteers in our area are.

On Monday's "Gulf Coast Live-Connect!" call-in radio show on 90.1 FM, you'll have a chance to talk with some of these  volunteers, to find out a little more about what they do and how you can become involved.

Be sure to tune in to Gulf Coast Live-Connect on Monday afternoon at 2:00  to explore the world of small business, in particular, food-related businesses.  On Friday night's Connect TV program, we met some hard-working folks who are running their own restaurants, coffee shops and catering services.  You can even hire a chef to come to your home and turn the evening into a cooking lesson!  On Monday we'll talk about the realities of taking on a new career in food.

Many people are opening their own businesses or at least thinking about it these days.  If you've dreamed of being your own boss, then call the experienced folks at the Service Corps of Retired Executives(SCORE).  Former supermarket executive Bob Carren brought a lifetime of insight into the world of small business ownership on our Monday edition of Gulf Coast Live-Connect!  The number one reason for many business failures?  A lack of a solid business plan.  SCORE can help you figure out how to create one...and improve your chances of survival.  Give them a call at 239-489-2935 or email at:score219@embarqmail.com

I loved the program on getaways in Southwest Florida; those places were some of my favorite haunts--especially the Red Coconut and Everglades City.  Please have more programs about getaways!

Our journey this week took us to Arcadia, Everglades City/Chokoloskee Island and Fort Myers Beach.  Each community is steeped in history.  To learn more about Ft. Myers Beach, contact the Estero Island Historic Society at:239-463-0435.  For more information on Arcadia/DeSoto County go to: www.historicdesoto.org

And for a unique look at 'old Florida', visit the Everglades City website at:evergladeschamber.com.  Each of these destinations is definitely worth the effort to get there.

Jim Mac:

Meeting you at WGCU's meet and greet solidified my committment to supporting Public Media here in Southwest Florida. I missed your initial segments, but I was viewing the one last night regarding Naples Biodiesel with processing of used cooking oils as a fuel alternative in diesel engines. Is there an alternative such as this for gasoline engines?? We are all responsible in monitoring our energy usage and not be BIGfoot or leadfoot in carbon blueprinting. It is both promising and exciting that alternative fuel sources are being developed that will ease our thirst and dependence on foreign oil. Whatever source of energy it is,we need to be more efficient and conscious of our consumption. We are highly dependent on electricity for most of our daily activites and conservation and better efficiency in our homes and businesses will assure us in meeting growing demands for our economy to flourish. Building more power plants is not the answer to increased demand!Conservation and greater efficiency is the answer!!

Looking forward to much more.

What a bummer to discover your classical music is broadcast only on HD radio. That leaves snowbirds like me and other regular listeners without any classical music station in southwest Florida. I'm not about to buy an HD radio for the five months I'm here. Couldn't you at least play classical music in the late night hours? You still play Bob Polucha then. As it is, there is too much talk on NPR stations without you making it an all day broadcast. You certainly are not serving the community by cutting off most listeners from classical music.  Please relent a little.
